The Flying Tea Bag Experiment

May 7, 2024by admin0

If your child is curious about why this 👆🏽happens, here’s a simple explanation – Convection!

When we set the top of the teabag on fire, we heat the air around it and inside. Warm air is less dense than cold air so as it rises, cooler air from underneath rushes to replace it causing the updraft that lifts our teabag. This movement of heat through fluid (liquid, or gas in this case) is called convection.

How cool is that?

✨Examples of convection ✨

You can point out convection in other everyday situations like when we watch the steam from a hot cup of tea rises.

Another great example is why we feel a breeze at the beach – the land is heated and the air around becomes warmer than the water nearby, so when these warm molecules move up, they’re replaced by cool air from the ocean, creating a “Sea Breeze”.

And the coolest is perhaps the hot air balloon!

Always have a conversation on fire safety. ⚠️

If you’ve learnt something new, don’t forget to double tap and share. Happy playing!
